Gold was discovered on French Creek by the groups prospector and news of it spread rapidly. As a result, thousands of people flocked to the area looking to get rich quick. The original campsite of the expedition quickly turned into a thriving mining community and the town of Custer was born. But in 1876, word of a rich strike in Deadwood Gulch reached the settlement.
