HISTORY

In 1874, Lt. Col. George A. Custer lead the 7th calvary on the first expedition of the Black Hills. Its mission was to look for suitable locations for a fort, find a route to the southwest, and to investigate the possibility of gold mining.
Gold was discovered on French Creek by the groups prospector and news of it spread rapidly. As a result, thousands of people flocked to the area looking to get rich quick. The original campsite of the expedition quickly turned into a thriving mining community and the town of Custer was born. But in 1876, word of a rich strike in Deadwood Gulch reached the settlement. Because most of the towns residence were miners, they packed up there things and moved onto Deadwood.
