HISTORY
Like many other towns in the area, Hill City was established during the gold rush. It was founded in 1876, shortly after neighboring town Custer, making it the oldest existing town in Pennington County. In August 1990 the the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton – nicknamed Sue – was found in the area.
TODAY
Hill City has continued to evolve as an archeological, paleontological, and geological hub for Black Hills. While Sue is now on display in Chicago, Hill City still boasts a fantastic collection of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, along with minerals, from the Black Hills region that can be found at the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research.

Hill City Quilt Show & Sale – September 9-10
Join us from 9 am – 4 pm daily for this two-day celebration of fabric arts. The show features a vendor mall, demonstrations, prizes, special events, and over 200 beautiful quilts. Also special events will include a Featured Artist, a Bed-Turning and Supper on Saturday, and a Pillowcase Roundup to help area kids in need.
