Keystone Schoolhouse

Keystone was founded in 1876 after the discovery of gold along Battle Creek. As a result a settlement was established around the area. Originally named Harney, after Harney Mountain, the population diminished as the placer gold was depleted. When more gold was discovered at the present location of the Keystone Mine, people returned to the area. However, the town did not experience real growth until a large gold vein was unearthed a few hundred yards from the Keystone Mine just 3 years later.

The Holy Terror Mine, caused the population of Keystone to jump to 3,000, which made it larger than Rapid City at the time. After the completion of Mount Rushmore in 1941, a new revenue source arrived. 393,000 tourists came to see the monument within its first year. This number continued to increase in the following years bringing commerce to Keystone.

Located right in the center of the Black Hills, Keystone is the perfect home-base for your vacation. Nearby, you will find jaw-dropping national monuments such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial. Just outside of Keystone, you can start a journey down the famous Iron Mountain Road. Here you will experience narrow granite tunnels and spiraling pigtail bridges. As a result, Iron Mountain Road is one of the best rides in the Hills. Hiking and biking trails are plentiful and action-packed snowmobiling or UTV riding opportunities are never far.
