HISTORY
First settled in 1876, and incorporated in 1877, the City of Lead is a sparkling jewel nestled in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota. Founded at the site of gold discoveries which eventually became the Homestake mine. The original claims were bought out by George Hears. He developed them into the Homestake, the single greatest producing gold mine in America. The Homestake Mine closed in 2001 as the mine reached its production limit. However this was not the end of Homestake. In 2006, the mine was transformed into the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Here scientists probe the depths of space to learn more about our place in the universe.
